Los Angeles-based dancer and choreographer Mythili Prakash, chosen by Akram Khan as his ‘choreographer of the future’ for DU’s Four by Four Commissions, brought her newest creation to Croydon as part of Dance Umbrella Festival’s takeover of Fairfield Halls.
Here and Now is a contemporary reflection on Mythili’s relationship with time; as a mother, an artist and a human being. Inspired by the illusory nature of time in Eastern philosophy and myth, where whole lifetimes are played out in the blink of an eye, Here and Now explores the human struggle to be in the present.
Internationally acclaimed as a leading practitioner of Bharata Natyam, Mythili began her training with her mother Viji Prakash and is now mentored by Malavika Sarukkai. She has toured her own work internationally with creative collaborators including her brother/vocalist Aditya Prakash who, along with Percussion artist Sumesh Narayanan, has created the music for this piece. Here and Now features live vocal by Sushma Soma and live percussion and vocal by Sumesh Narayanan.
A Dance Umbrella Four by Four commission.
Produced and presented by Dance Umbrella in partnership with Fairfield Halls and Croydon Council.
“Watching Prakash move in slow motion is beautiful, as she intentionally carves through the space. She’s purposeful and majestic.”
