A powerful fusion of rhythm and resistance, Ghostly Labor: A Dance Film explores the history and reality of farm work in the US-Mexico borderlands through tap dance, Mexican Zapateado, Son Jarocho and Afro-Caribbean movement. Blending documentary and performance, the film uses polyrhythmic choreography and an original score to expose the systemic exploitation of migrant labour, while celebrating the strength and solidarity of collective action.
Created by La Mezcla Artistic Director Vanessa Sanchez with media artist John Jota Leaños, it stems from a multi-year community project with farmworkers in Half Moon Bay, California, in collaboration with nonprofit ALAS (Ayudando Latinos a Soñar).
Drawing on farmworkers’ oral histories, Ghostly Labor honours the land and those who sustain it, amplifying the resilience, knowledge and voices too often left unheard.
