Scottish Ballet’s Choreographer in Residence Sophie Laplane partners with James Bonas (The Crucible) and film director Oscar Sansom to create Dive, a short film inspired by French artist Yves Klein and what has become the world’s most famous shade of blue.
Expect Laplane’s quintessentially quirky choreography paired with striking visuals in this teal-toned treat.

Sophie Laplane was born in Paris, France and trained at The Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and Paris Opera Ballet School.
Sophie joined Scottish Ballet in 2004. She remained a dancer with the company until 2017, when she became Scottish Ballet’s Resident Choreographer. 2025 marks an exciting year for Sophie, creating her first full-length production for Scottish Ballet, Mary, Queen of Scots, whilst Dextera was performed by Scottish Ballet in New Zealand, sharing the stage in Wellington with the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
Her recent work If at First was created for Ballet Black, and was performed throughout 2024, touring to UK venues including the Barbican, The Linbury Royal Opera House, and the Festival Theatre Edinburgh. With Oh! Les Mains, Sophie is a double prize-winner at the Concours de Jeunes Chorégraphes, Biarritz 2022, taking both the Prix des Professionnels and the Prix du Public. Her world première of Galantheae was created on and performed by Ballet West at the 2022 Salt Lake City Dance Festival.
Sophie’s other creations for Scottish Ballet include Oxymore, at the Edinburgh Festival in 2013, Maze, later adapted for film, winning Best Screen Dance Short at the 2015 San Francisco Dance Film Festival and Sibilo, for Scottish Ballet’s 2016 Autumn Tour. It also premiered in the U.S in 2019 at the Ballet West Choreographic Festival in Salt Lake City and performed again at the Joyce Theatre New York in 2020.

British director James Bonas’ work encompasses a large and varied repertoire, spanning classical theatre and opera through to contemporary works, multi-disciplinary projects and the use of innovative technology.
Recent highlights include Abrahamsen’s Snow Queen for Opéra national du Rhin, Jonathan Dove’s Flight for Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and a collaboration with Damon Albarn as Artistic Consultant on the revival of a multi-disciplinary piece Le Vol du Boli that they premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in 2020. Together with the illustrator and animator Grégoire Pont, Bonas has created Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges and L’heure espagnole, and Orff’s Der Mond for Opéra National de Lyon. Their L’enfant has been revived globally from Oman to Cincinnati, San Francisco and Limoges.

Oscar Sansom is a BAFTA and multi award-winning Director whose cinematic aesthetic is informed by photography and fine art.
Known for bold, sometimes surreal work and an uncompromising attention to detail, his trailblazing music film output has established him as one of the country’s foremost directors of the genre. Spanning music video, commercials, documentary, film and TV, his work includes artists such as Biffy Clyro, Placebo, Royal Blood and Liam Gallagher, brands including Jack Daniel’s and The Macallan, and broadcasters and agencies including the BBC, CBS and The Leith Agency.
