Flamenco is celebrated around the world as one of Spain’s most iconic cultural traditions. Documentary film Gurumbé: Afro-Andalusian Memories, reveals a history that has long been out of sight, not out of practice: the fundamental contribution of Afro-Andalusian communities to the music, dance and cultural expressions that shaped this art form.

Through historical research, music and performance, the film traces the experiences of enslaved Africans brought to Spain during the colonial era, and explores how their cultural practices are woven into Andalusian society. Music and dance emerged as powerful forms of expression, identity and resistance.

Holding a mirror to conventional narratives of Spanish cultural history, Gurumbé uncovers the African roots of flamenco and spotlights stories that have too often been erased from public memory. This acclaimed documentary offers a thought-provoking re-examination of one of the world’s most celebrated dance traditions.
