Watch: Sonya Lindfors on One Drop | Post-show talk at Battersea Arts Centre

How the Cameroonian-Finnish dance artist brought her decolonial dream to life on stage, defying definition and showing the multiplicity of blackness

Subtitles available

A speculative summoning, a decolonial dream, an autopsy of the Western stage and an operetta. One Drop is a dance performance that invites the audience on a journey to expand notions of what blackness is. The work interrogates the ghosts of the Western stage and its entanglements and relationships to capitalism, coloniality and modernity.

“It can be fun and joyous and silly and goofy and deep and painful and sad at the same time.”

Following the UK premiere in October 2023 at Battersea Arts Centre, as part of Dance Umbrella Festival 2023, the show’s creator Sonya Lindfors sat down with Dance Umbrella Artistic Director Freddie Opoku-Addaie to discuss where the idea for the work came from, the politics and histories that underpin One Drop, and collaborating with artists from different creative disciplines.
