Abby Zbikowski teams up with filmmaker Jeremy Jacob for a Dance Umbrella commissioned film adaptation of her company’s stage work Radioactive Practice (2022).
Set against an Americana backdrop of what could be the beginning, middle or aftermath of societal collapse, this film follows six people as they hurtle themselves through ever shifting landscapes and psyche-emotional states while labouring through hyperphysical material sourced from Zbikowski and her dancers’ movement backgrounds in breaking, synchronized swimming, post-modern dance, martial arts, and West African dance.
Radioactive Practice sees Zbikowski’s attempt to lay bare the challenging and complex physicality of her movement language, as the dancers work their way through challenging and complex physical movement, confronting expectations of physical and mental limits. The filmic iteration of this work for stage highlights the nonlinear nature of how we experience, reinscribe, and embrace or deny the things that constitute our sense of purpose in the world.
