At the heart of Merce Cunningham’s entrancing latest work is a beautiful duet around which XOVER unfolds, against décor by Robert Rauschenberg and John Cage’s Aria and Fontana Mix, performed live.
In Programme 1, XOVER will be presented alongside Cunningham’s 1960 classic work Crises, an early collaboration with Rauschenberg for five dancers, and the emotive BIPED, which explores the sensual possibilities existing between dancers and their virtual counterparts.
Programme 2 offers another chance to see XOVER, this time alongside CRWDSPCR, featuring John King’s blues ’99. Also on the programme is Split Sides, with music by Radiohead and Sigur Rós, in which the sequence of the choreography, music, décor, costumes and lighting is determined immediately before the performance by the roll of dice.
Complementing the two triple bills is a variety of associated film and education events, celebrating Merce Cunningham’s return to the Barbican as part of bite’s 10th anniversary year.
