Explore the timeline featuring highlights of 38 years of Dance Umbrella. This timeline was developed 1978-2013 by former Artistic Director Betsy Gregory.
Dance Umbrella has established its reputation through the risk and rigour of its programme. Over the past 38 years the festival has brought to London audiences a multitude of exceptional artists for the very first time, including names that have since become internationally recognised such as Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, and Trisha Brown. With UK artists it has championed, among others, Michael Clark and Akram Khan from the start of their careers, and most recently new faces such as the Bellyflop collective and Hetain Patel. To date DU has brought over 734 artists from 32 countries to over one million people. It has shown work at 55 different venues from Smithfields Market to the British Library, from Whitechapel Art Gallery to a Baker Street bathroom showroom, from long boats on canals to the streets of London.
